Host4Geeks’ GDPR Compliance

GDPR – General Data Protection regulations is coming into force on 25 May 2018 and applies to all businesses doing business in or with a person in the EU.

In our earlier blog post, GDPR & The Web Hosting Industry we wrote about how the web hosting and cloud services industry as a whole can prepare for the upcoming changes post GDPR. As 25 May 2018 approaches we are starting to receive a lot more emails from clients asking us about GDPR and how we are preparing for it.

The GDPR regulation can be reduced to the following most important points. For each point, we explain how we handle its compliance.

Right not to be subject to automated decision-making including profiling: we don’t do that (and never will)

Subject access requests

Host4Geeks replies to all access requests (positively or negatively) under 1 month (the legal limit from GDPR).

We take our obligation under GDPR very seriously and while the regulations are a challenge to implement, we believe they are a change for the better and fully support them.

We are proud to announce that Blesta is now included for free with our Reseller Hosting plans and additionally as an addon with our other hosting services.

Till recently, we only offered Free WHMCS Licenses with our Reseller Hosting plans, however, considering the fact that the growing popularity of Blesta has made it a viable and worthy alternative toWHMCS and in order to provide our customers with an option to choose a billing platform of their preference, we are proud to announce our Reseller Partnership with Blesta.

Few notable features of Blesta are:

  • Manage everything in one place. Client profile pages take management to the next level, providing a quick and simple overview of the client with quick access to all related tasks.
  • Invoicing, service provisioning & suspension, payment processing, payment reminders, backups and more are all automated. Blesta does the heavy lifting so you don’t have to.
  • Clients can open tickets in their client area, or by email. Tickets are assigned to departments, by priority, and handled by staff members in an ajax powered interface.

A demo is available on the Blesta website, so feel free to give it a try before making a decision.

Existing clients can opt to swap their WHMCS license for a Blesta license by opening a ticket with our billing department. New clients are given the option to either choose a WHMCS License or a Blesta license with their Reseller Hosting account.

Let’s Encrypt at Host4Geeks – Free SSLs for everyone!

letsencrypt-supported-hosting

Unlimited Free SSLs for everyone!

Now that we have your attention, follow along.

Let’s Encrypt is a new Certificate Authority with an ambitious goal to encrypt as much WWW traffic as possible. They issue secure certificates for your websites and are absolutely free. Let’s Encrypt is supported by major players like Mozilla, Akamai, Cisco, the EFF, the Internet Security Research Group and others. Their goal is to provide free, automatic and secure certificates so that every website can be secured with an SSL certificate.

This is not the first attempt at offering free SSLs to encrypt the majority of the web traffic. CloudFlare, back in September of 2014 started offering their Universal SSL which supported HTTPS traffic to all websites using CloudFlare.

Why is it important to encrypt your traffic?

Unencrypted HTTP traffic flying across the internet can easily be monitored. Anyone on the internet can peek on traffic and spy on anyone. We at Host4Geeks are committed to ensure that your data and traffic remain private and one good solution is encryption!

When you see the following icon in your web browser’s address bar, you can be assured that the traffic between your computer and the website is encrypted and secure.

ssl-certificate-secured

This may not seem to be very important initially but imagine yourself shopping at a website that does not use SSL and when you pay for your order using a credit card the details of the card and other information that you enter are transmitted between your computer and the website and if this data is not encrypted anyone in between would be able to peek into this transmission and obtain your credit card details. Scary? It should be.

Till now if you had a website and wanted to secure the traffic between your website and the visitor you’d have to purchase a SSL certificate, we’ve been offering them at an already affordable price of $8.95 /yr. But this was still an entry barrier for many.

Starting today you can install a free SSL certificate on your domain hosted with Host4Geeks powered by Let’s Encrypt. They are absolutely identical to just any other paid certificate, the offer the same levels of encryption and security. They are recognized across all major browsers and are easy to install and manage. The only major difference being, while traditional certificates are valid for a year and above. Let’s Encrypt’s certificates are valid for 90 days but can be easily renewed and are free.

We are committed to a more secure web and are now supporting and offering free Let’s Encrypt SSLs on all our Shared, Reseller and Semi-Dedicated Hosting plans with support for VPS and Dedicated clients coming soon even if this means taking a hit on our paid SSL sales. We will still continue to offer our paid range of SSL certificates that you can purchase.

At this moment, Let’s encrypt only supports domain validated SSLs and they have no plans to offer Extended Validated certificates (so no green bar folks!).

How do you get one?

We are still working on integrating this feature into our control panel till then, just login to your Client Portal and navigate to Support > Request Let’s Encrypt Certificate and we will install the certificate for you.

We now have an easier way to do this from your cPanel interface, take a look at this knowledgebase article.

If this saves you a few dollars, we welcome you to send over a small donation to the wonderful guys over at Let’s Encrypt – Donate via PayPal.

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays!

host4geeks-christmas

Hello!

The holiday season is upon us. Some of our employees are on a holiday spending time with their families and friends while the rest of us are enjoying ourselves here at work. For me it is a time to reflect on the bygone days and be grateful for everything. It is the time to thank you (our customers) and the wonderful team, our friends, families and well-wishers.

With things changing at the speed of light and the world progressing at speeds never seen before it is easy to get stressed out and forget to stop for a while and look back and see where you came from but when you take a moment to stop and see life with gratitude, things start to change.

Throughout the year we have had the pleasure to work with and help over 5000 customers such as you, who placed their trust on us to ensure that their business and online presence is up and reliable. It is an honor to be able to serve you.

2014 has been a challenging yet exciting year for us, we went through a transition from being a small early-age startup to a booming and growing business. We hired Adam as our Technical Operations Manager and although you do not see a lot of him on the front but he does magic behind the scenes. The plan and move to our new Hybrid SSD based shared hosting platform that our Shared, Reseller and Semi-Dedicated customers are experiencing, was executed by him. We also hired additional support staff to maintain our high levels of support that we deliver. Our expansion in the United Kingdom was another huge achievement for us and the feedback we have received is overwhelming.

But I want to take a moment to emphasize that none of these would have been possible without you, your trust, your continued support and your honest feedback to our surveys. On behalf of the entire team I commit to you that we will further improve ourselves, expand our service offerings and live up to the values of our excellent customer service.

This Christmas, I wish you good health, peace of mind and happiness and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

All of us here at Host4Geeks want to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. We look forward to working with you in 2015!

[Updated 2019] New & Improved SSD based servers

host4geeks ssd hosting

In this post we would like to introduce you to our new SSD based server setup for our Shared, Reseller and Semi-Dedicated customers.

Previously our servers consisted of standard HDD drives, which have a lot of space, however they are not really fast. Over the past weeks we have been upgrading our cPanel nodes to our next generation hybrid setup!

Ok, so what is this next generation setup?

It’s great! It means that we have both HDD and SSD drives! HDD drives serve static files from your home directory, for LiteSpeed (our webserver) for example. We also have SSD drives which serve exclusively MySQL databases and another set of SSD drives that cache your data.

Ok, but what does this mean to me?

SSD drives outperform standard HDD plate drives by far – it means your websites will load a lot faster, the server load will be significally lower due to no I/O bottleneck that HDD drives caused. SSD can serve between 50-150x more MySQL queries than HDD drives.

All of this will impact your websites – they will load faster, a lot faster! SSD drives are smaller than HDD, however our setup is designed so we have enough space for everything!

This sounds great! But won’t this impact on the price of my package?

Absolutely no!

We have designed our platform so that we can keep the current upkeep cost and increase the overall performance, so you don’t need to worry about your bills – they stay the same even though everything will be faster!

We would like to ensure everyone that everything is proper, we have it all under control and you can enjoy your websites loading faster without any issues.

Host4Geeks always aims for the best, we always want to offer the best price/performance ratio for everyone so we are all happy, because that is most important, right?

We were, we are and we will always be here for you, our dear clients and will always try to serve you the best as we can. Host4Geeks will continue to increase it’s performance and stability all of the time, we want to provide you with the best for the lowest possible price.

The Monthly Digest – November ’14

host4geeks-newsletter

As we make our way into the final quarter of 2014, we’ve decided to publish this monthly blog post which we call – “The Monthly Digest“. Through this, we plan to inform you, in brief about the changes, upgrades and behind the scenes activities going on at Host4Geeks.

Here’s what we’ve been working on for the past month and what’s coming up:

  • We’re working hard on pushing some changes to our CRM and helpdesk, ironing out some known bugs (such as file attachments) and improving the overall performance. In the coming weeks we will be scheduling a maintenance window to roll out these updates.
  • As we continue to grow, we need more hands on the deck. We’ve made two new hires in the month of October. Adam has joined us all the way from Poland as our Technical Operations Manager, you will see him at times replying to escalated tickets as well. We also have Sreejit joining us from India as a Junior Support Technician and will lend a hand in our helpdesk. Do say ‘Hi!’ when you see them. 🙂
  • Reduced “Live Technical Support” – We’ve been providing Technical Support via Live Chat for over a year now and both we and our clients have found it to be largely inefficient when it comes to resolving technical issues. Most issues require some investigation to be done and going back and forth with the customer and the live chat system is largely inefficient in doing so. After speaking to some of our clients, we’ve decided to slowly reduce our technical support over live chat and instead focus on reducing our ticket response times even further and have a comprehensive and detailed knowledgebase for self-help. Initially, we will shirk the time window for live chat to business hours only before reducing it any further.
  • Later this month, we plan to add another DNS server to our cluster for our UK client base, this server will be located at our UK datacenter.

That will be it from me this time, I look forward to your comments.
